The United States Mint has launched a special coin to mark its 230th anniversary. This new coin, made of pure gold, honors America’s first dollar coin, the Flowing Hair silver dollar, first introduced in 1794. Crafted at the West Point Mint, the 1-ounce coin has high-relief designs, making the details stand out beautifully.
The original Flowing Hair silver dollar was created on October 15, 1794, when David Rittenhouse was the Mint Director. The design, known for its elegance, was done by Robert Scot, the first Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.
In October, the Mint also released a Flowing Hair Silver Medal to celebrate this milestone. The medal was highly sought after and sold out in just over a day. Collectors are especially interested in two rare versions: 1,794 medals with a special “230” mark and 230 medals signed by Ventris C. Gibson, the current Mint Director.
The gold coin released today is limited to 17,500 pieces and does not include the special mark. However, the Mint plans to auction 230 coins later that will feature this unique mark.
Flowing Hair High Relief Gold Coin Designs and Specifications
The coin features modern recreations of Robert Scot’s original designs on both the front (obverse) and back (reverse) sides, crafted in 24-karat gold. To give more details about how these historic designs were recreated, the U.S. Mint has also shared a video.
The front of the coin, recreated by Mint Medallic Artist John P. McGraw, shows a portrait of Liberty facing right, surrounded by 15 stars representing the states that had ratified the Constitution by 1794. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed on the front, just as it was on the original coin, along with the year “2024.”
The back of the coin, recreated by Mint Medallic Artist Eric David Custer, features a laurel wreath surrounding an eagle with its wings spread wide. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are inscribed above the design.
The coin’s denomination, “HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT,” is engraved along its edge.
